What is a drink fee?

TL;DR: Livehouses collect a mandatory drink fee at the entrance. Pay it when you check in and use the ticket inside.

In Japanese livehouses, you often have to pay a "drink fee" at the entrance. This quick explainer covers why it exists and how to use the ticket.

Why is there a drink fee?

Most venues require customers to pay a drink fee upon entry. The explanation you will hear most often is that live houses run as food-and-beverage businesses, so every guest orders at least one drink. Each venue sets its own fee and rules, so check the official event page.

When do I pay it?

Pay the drink fee at the entrance when staff check your name, ticket, or QR code. They will hand you a drink ticket to use at the bar.

How much is it?

Expect ¥600-¥700 in Tokyo. Pay in cash or IC when staff hand you the drink ticket.

How do I use the drink ticket?

Keep the ticket and show it at the bar when you order. You can usually use it any time during the show.

What if I don't drink alcohol?

You can order soft drinks. Tell the bartender "non-alcohol" and they'll point to the options. The fee is still required even if you skip the drink.

Tips

Checklist
