No Japanese? How to communicate at a livehouse
TL;DR: Short phrases and gestures go a long way. Use the phrasebook for tickets, payment, and directions.
Many staff members understand basic English, but it is not guaranteed. Showing a Japanese sentence on your phone is the fastest way to communicate politely.
At the entrance
Staff may ask for your name or ticket. If you need help, show the phrasebook for same-day tickets, re-entry, or drink fees.
At the bar
Point to the drink ticket and show the phrase for non-alcoholic drinks if needed. Cash is still the safest option.
Directions and timing
Use the phrasebook to ask about the restroom, lockers, or the last train time before you leave.
Tips
Checklist
- Keep your phone brightness high when showing phrases.
- Screenshots work better than apps if reception is weak.
- Staff will usually respond with gestures even if they are shy about English.
