Table 1. What one evening out costs one adult (outside prices: Tokyo; live house: JGIG listings in Tokyo and Osaka)
Note: Outside prices are as listed on each official page on 20 Oct 2026, for one adult. They vary by date, seat and branch. JGIG figures cover shows listed on JGIG, not every live house.
Why compare a gig with other evenings out?
A live house splits its price into a ticket and a drink fee paid at the door. So the listed ticket can look smaller than the real cost of the night. Putting the total next to other evenings out shows where a gig sits in a trip budget. For how the ticket and the drink fee add up, see How much does it cost to see a gig in Tokyo?.
How does a live house night compare?
With a film. The median live house night (¥4,100) costs ¥1,900 more than a standard adult ticket at TOHO Cinemas Shinjuku (¥2,200). That page also notes no late-show discount. Even the ticket alone is higher: the median live house ticket is ¥3,800 (440 listed shows).
With traditional theater. Regular adult admission to the Suzumoto Engeijo rakugo theater is ¥3,500, ¥600 below the live house median. Kabukiza's regular reserved seats for one part of its November 2026 program run from ¥5,000 to ¥20,000. So the median live house night sits below the lowest of those seats.
With a museum. Adult entry to the Tokyo National Museum's collection exhibition is ¥1,000 (official admission page, checked 20 Oct 2026). The National Museum of Western Art charges ¥500 for its permanent collection (official admission page, checked 20 Oct 2026).
With a public bath. Tokyo caps adult entry to a public bath at ¥600 from 1 August 2026. That is the same as the most common live house drink fee. Among listed shows with a drink fee, 88.5% charge ¥600 (279 shows).
What does each price include?
Each price covers entry, but each counts something different.
- Live house: the ticket plus one drink. Extra drinks, merch, lockers and trains are on top. See How much does it cost to see a gig in Tokyo?.
- Cinema: one standard seat for one film.
- Rakugo: one show at the theater.
- Kabuki: one part of the day's program. In November 2026, Kabukiza runs a day part and an evening part.
- Museums: the collection or permanent exhibition only. Special exhibitions cost more.
- Public bath: entry up to the city's cap. The cap is a maximum, not an average.
When does the comparison change?
- The night of the week. The live house median moves from ¥3,750 on Thursdays to ¥4,600 on Sundays and Mondays (61, 83 and 52 listed shows; the median counts only shows that list both prices). Live music prices by night of the week explains this.
- Discount days and branches. TOHO Cinemas Shinjuku lists ¥1,400 tickets on Wednesdays and on the 1st of each month. Since 1 July 2026, TOHO Cinemas sets prices theater by theater, so other branches can differ.
- Bigger shows. About one in eight counted live house nights (12.8%) totals ¥6,000 or more.
- The city. Tokyo and Osaka share the same median, ¥4,100 (325 and 140 shows; the median counts only shows that list both prices). See Tokyo vs Osaka live music.
- Prices change. Promoters and venues can change prices. Check the official page before you go.
