Earplugs and standing: what to expect at small gigs in Japan
At a small live house in Japan, most people stand through the show, and some shows are loud. JGIG's guides say earplugs are welcome and encouraged for louder shows, and some venue counters sell them. Bring your own pair, eat before you go in, and plan to stand from the moment you enter until the last act.

Why plan for volume and standing?
The venues JGIG lists are small rooms, and every venue page gives its capacity as standing. You are close to the stage and the speakers, with people around you. JGIG's guides say earplugs are welcome, and encouraged for louder shows. Two venue pages also point to their sound systems: SOCORE FACTORY in Osaka and Shinjuku MARZ.
How long will you be on your feet?
Longer than the band's set. People go in at doors, and the music begins at start. At listed shows, doors open a median of 30 min minutes before the start. On a multi-band night (taiban), several acts play one after another, so the night can run well past the first set. The start time doesn't tell you the end, so check the official page. See How a live house night works.
How do you look after your hearing?
- Bring earplugs and put them in before the first act.
- If it feels too loud, move further back from the stage.
- The World Health Organization advises using earplugs in noisy places, staying away from sources of sound and taking breaks from loud sound.
When is it different?
- Some rooms can have seats. Shimokitazawa ERA's venue page lists 50–60 seats when configured. Check the event post.
- You need a break. JGIG's solo guide says to ask about re-entry at the door before you step out for air. DaisyBar, for one, charges the drink fee again. See Lockers, bags and re-entry.
- Your bag gets heavy. You hold it all night if there is no locker, so pack light.
- You feel unwell. Move further back from the stage, and ask staff for help.
How do you get ready?
- Check the venue page on JGIG for its capacity and lockers.
- On the show page, note Doors and Start. On the official page, look for an end time.
- Eat before you go. Only a few live houses serve food, and outside food and drinks are usually not allowed.
- Wear comfortable shoes and layers you can take off.
- Put earplugs in your pocket before you join the line.
What if you are alone, have no Japanese or cash, or buy at the door?
- Going alone: A spot by the bar or the side wall makes a break easier to take.
- No Japanese: To ask about re-entry or a break, show a phrase from the phrasebook.
- No cash: Earplugs from the counter and extra drinks may need yen. Bring your own earplugs to be sure.
- Door ticket: Door-ticket holders go in last, so you may stand near the back. That spot is further from the speakers.
