Lockers, bags and re-entry at Japanese live houses

Some Japanese live houses have coin lockers or a cloak room, but others have no lockers, so keep your bag small. Re-entry depends on the venue and the show: it may be allowed, allowed if you pay the drink fee again, or not allowed. Leave large luggage before you go, and ask about lockers and re-entry at the entrance.

Why plan your bag before the show?

Most venues listed on JGIG are small standing rooms. There is little space for bags, and JGIG's guides ask you not to block the entrance or the bar line. Lockers, where they exist, can be used up as the room fills. So the smaller your bag, the easier your night.

Which listed venues have lockers?

This is what each JGIG venue page says about lockers.

How does re-entry work?

JGIG's guides say re-entry rules vary by venue and event. If re-entry is allowed, staff may stamp your hand or check a wristband. Venue websites show three patterns:

  • Pay again: DaisyBar in Shimokitazawa charges the drink fee each time you come back in.
  • Not allowed in principle: The FAQs of VARON, club vijon and Zeela in Osaka say re-entry is basically not allowed. Some shows make an exception, which may need another drink fee.
  • Ask on the night: Many venue pages, including JGIG's, don't state a rule. Ask at the entrance.

For these venues side by side, see Live houses compared: lockers, re-entry, smoking and stairs.

What are the exceptions?

  • The show can change the rule. The same venue can have different locker numbers or re-entry rules on different nights. DaisyBar offers a cloak only at shows that list it on the event page.
  • Lockers can run out. Arrive by doors if you need one.
  • Leaving without asking. If you step out without checking, you may not get back in, or you may pay the drink fee again.
  • Keep your stub. If you leave for a short time, staff may stamp your hand along with your drink ticket stub.

How do you handle your bag and re-entry?

  1. Check your venue's page on JGIG for lockers.
  2. Leave large luggage at your hotel. Carry a small bag and some yen for a locker.
  3. Arrive by doors if you want a locker, before the room fills up.
  4. At the entrance, ask about lockers or a cloak room, and about re-entry.
  5. Inside, keep your bag close and out of the entrance and bar line.
  6. Before you step out, ask at the door. Keep your stamp, wristband or drink ticket stub.

What if you are alone, have no Japanese or cash, or buy at the door?

  • Going alone: No one can watch your bag for you. Use a locker if there is one, or keep your bag in front of you.
  • No Japanese: Show a phrase from the lockers and baggage phrasebook. It also covers re-entry.
  • No cash: Coin lockers need yen. JGIG's guides advise carrying yen for lockers, even if the venue takes IC cards.
  • Door ticket: Door-ticket holders go in last, so lockers may already be in use when you get in. Bring as little as you can.
