Can you smoke at Japanese live houses?
It depends on the venue, and sometimes on the show. Official pages checked on 15 October 2026 range from no smoking anywhere in the building to a smoking area inside, and most venues don't say. Check the venue's page and the event post, and if you plan to step outside to smoke, ask about re-entry first.

At a glance
The short version
| If you… | What to know | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Don't smoke | A venue with a smoking area is not a smoke-free building | Look for 館内全面禁煙 (no smoking in the whole building) |
| Smoke | Some venues have a smoking area. Others say nothing | Look for 喫煙所 or スモーキングエリア (smoking area) |
| Want to smoke outside | Leaving and coming back has its own rules | Ask about re-entry at the door first |
| Use JGIG venue pages | Only one listed venue page gives a smoking rule so far | Read the venue's official page too |
Why check before you go?
Smoking rules are set venue by venue, and the event can change the details. If you don't smoke, you may want a room with no smoking at all. If you smoke, you need to know whether there is a smoking area, or whether you must go outside. Going outside brings in re-entry rules, which also vary.
In Tokyo, most facilities used by many people are, in principle, non-smoking indoors, with exceptions such as designated smoking rooms. People under 20 may not enter smoking rooms. How this applies to each live house depends on the venue, so check its official information.
What do official pages say?
Grouped by rule, from the official pages checked on 15 October 2026:
- No smoking anywhere in the building: DaisyBar (Shimokitazawa).
- No smoking inside, with outdoor areas set aside: Live House Pangea (Shinsaibashi), on its JGIG venue page.
- Smoking only in an area at the entrance: Zeela (Umeda).
- Smoking allowed, in a space that differs by show: club vijon (Kitahorie).
- A smoking area mentioned on one event page: Nine Spices (Shinjuku), January 2026. It may not apply to every show.
- Wording unclear: VARON (Shinsaibashi). Check the official FAQ.
Most other venues in our research don't state a rule, and most JGIG venue pages don't give one yet. For these venues side by side with lockers, re-entry and stairs, see Live houses compared.
Which words should you look for?
| Japanese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 禁煙 | No smoking |
| 館内全面禁煙 | No smoking anywhere in the building |
| 喫煙所 | Smoking area |
| スモーキングエリア | Smoking area |
| 喫煙可 | Smoking allowed |
When can the rule change?
- The show sets the space. At club vijon, the smoking space differs by show. Read the event post.
- Going out may not be allowed. The Osaka FAQs of VARON, club vijon and Zeela say re-entry is not allowed in principle. Some shows make exceptions.
- Coming back can cost money. DaisyBar charges the drink fee each time you come back in.
- The page is old. A rule on a single event page may not apply to your night.
How do you check a venue?
- From your show on JGIG, go to the venue page.
- Follow its link to the official site. Find an FAQ or information page, and search it for 禁煙 or 喫煙.
- Read the event post for your night.
- If you need to smoke outside, ask about re-entry at the entrance before you leave.
- If you want to avoid smoke, stand away from the entrance and any smoking area.
What if you are alone, have no Japanese or cash, or buy at the door?
- Going alone: Before you step out to smoke, check re-entry, so you don't lose your night.
- No Japanese: Use the word table above. To ask about smoking or re-entry, show a phrase from the phrasebook.
- No cash: If re-entry costs another drink fee, you pay it in yen. Keep some with you.
- Door ticket: You enter after the numbered tickets. If re-entry isn't allowed, smoke before you join the line.
