Basements, stairs and phone signal at Japanese live houses

Many live houses in Japan are underground, and most venues JGIG lists are in a basement, going by their address. Phone reception can be weak down there, so save your ticket, map and phrases before you go in. If stairs are hard for you, read the venue's access page first: several official pages say stairs only.

Why does underground matter?

Basements change three things about your night. Phone signal can be weak, so live tickets and maps may not load. You reach the room by stairs, which matters with heavy bags or limited mobility. And the venue sits inside a larger building, so the access notes help you find the way in.

How do you find the way in?

These are access notes from JGIG venue pages that mention a basement or a floor.

What do official pages say about stairs?

JGIG venue pages don't list stairs or lifts yet. These are from venues' official pages, checked on 15 October 2026:

  • CLUB Que (Shimokitazawa): Second basement (B2). No slopes or other barrier-free facilities. Wheelchair visits are by advance booking, using an elevator to come and go. There are steps inside.
  • Niman Denatsu (Higashi-Koenji): You reach reception by going down "stairs with a slope", in the official wording.
  • VARON, club vijon and Zeela (Osaka): Front stairs only. The elevator can't be used.
  • Zeela (Umeda): Not barrier-free, and there is a 150 mm step at the back of the floor.

For lockers, re-entry and smoking at the same venues, see Live houses compared.

What can still catch you out?

  • No signal at the door. A ticket that needs to load may not open. Keep a screenshot, as JGIG's guide suggests.
  • Wi-Fi. JGIG's guide suggests looking for lobby Wi-Fi if you need to message friends. Don't count on it.
  • Floors on official pages can disagree. 440 and Zeela give two different floors on their own pages. Read the access page closely.
  • The room gets warm. JGIG's guide says venues can get warm. Wear layers you can take off.

How do you get ready for an underground venue?

  1. Open the venue page on JGIG. Read the address and the access notes.
  2. If stairs matter to you, open the venue's official access page or FAQ.
  3. Before you leave, save screenshots of your ticket, the map and the phrases you need.
  4. Open any payment app and log in while you still have signal.
  5. Check your route home and the last train. See Last trains after a gig in Tokyo.
  6. At the entrance, ask about lockers before the stairs and the room fill up.

What if you are alone, have no Japanese or cash, or buy at the door?

  • Going alone: Tell a friend where you are going before you go down. You may not be able to message them inside.
  • No Japanese: JGIG's solo guide suggests saving phrasebook screens before you enter. Start with the directions phrasebook.
  • No cash: Open any payment app before you go down, as JGIG's guide suggests. Cash doesn't depend on your phone.
  • Door ticket: You buy at the entrance and go in after numbered tickets. Keep your cash and phone ready while you wait.
