Coming from Australia? What works differently at Japan's live houses
At many small Australian venues, you buy on Oztix or Moshtix and walk in on general admission. In Japan, you pay a drink fee at the door on top of your ticket, and you go in by ticket number. Stepping out and back in can cost the drink fee again. The drinking age is 20, and some venues, mostly in Osaka, have smoking areas.
This guide is for small live houses in Tokyo and Osaka. It doesn't cover arena or dome concerts, clubs, or after-midnight nightlife. Facts checked 15 October 2026.

What extra do you pay at the door in Japan?
A fixed drink fee, separate from your ticket, at most live houses.
In Australia, the ACCC tells ticket sellers not to hide costs or add fees step by step. Parliament has also passed stricter drip-pricing rules. They start on 1 July 2027, so they are not in force yet. The Australian venue pages we checked didn't mention any drink purchase on top of the ticket.
In Japan, the extra cost is not a booking fee. It is a drink ticket you buy at the entrance and swap at the bar. The most common amount on JGIG listings is ¥600. More: How much is the drink fee?
Is it general admission at Japanese gigs?
Not quite. You go in by the number on your ticket.
The Australian gigs we checked were general admission. Japanese advance tickets often carry a ticket number (整理番号). Staff call numbers in blocks, and door tickets go in last. See What does the ticket number mean?
Can you get a pass-out at Japanese live houses?
Sometimes. Re-entry rules vary by show, and some charge the drink fee again.
At Northcote Social Club in Melbourne, you can come and go from the band room with a hand stamp. Japan has no single rule. Re-entry may be allowed, allowed if you pay the drink fee again, or not allowed. Ask the door staff before you leave. More: lockers, bags and re-entry.
Can 18- and 19-year-olds drink at gigs in Japan?
No. The drinking age in Japan is 20.
You can drink at 18 in Australia, and many gigs there are 18+. In Japan, the legal drinking age is 20, so you can't order alcohol until then. Some all-night shows in Tokyo don't admit anyone under 20, and others don't admit under-18s. Venues that name accepted IDs list a passport. We could not confirm whether foreign driver's licences are accepted, so bring your passport.
Can you smoke at Japanese live houses?
Mostly not indoors in Tokyo, but some venues, mostly in Osaka, have smoking areas.
NSW and Victoria ban smoking and vaping indoors in licensed venues. Tokyo's rules, under national law and a Tokyo Metropolitan ordinance, ban smoking indoors in principle, with exceptions for smoking rooms. Some live houses, mostly in Osaka, mention a smoking area on their official pages. If smoke bothers you, check first: Can you smoke at Japanese live houses?
Can you buy tickets from Australia, and do you need cash?
Often you can buy online, but some sites need a Japanese phone number. Bring some yen.
Many small gigs at home sell on Oztix or Moshtix. Some Japanese ticket sites ask for a Japanese phone number, and some work from overseas. See ticket sites that work without a Japanese phone number. Avoid unofficial resale sites, and buy from the official sellers listed on the event page.
Cards made up around 73% of payments in Australia in 2025, by number (Reserve Bank of Australia). In Japan, payment options at small venues vary, and some band merch stalls take cash only. See Do you need cash?
What works the same as at home?
At the Australian gigs we checked, a headliner plays with two to four support acts. Japanese bills often have several bands too.
