Coming from the UK? What works differently at Japan's live houses
At Japan's live houses, you pay a drink fee at the door on top of your ticket. You go in by the number on your ticket. Trains don't run all night in Tokyo or Osaka, so you plan your night around the last train, much like a UK curfew. The legal drinking age is 20.
This guide is for small live houses in Tokyo and Osaka. It doesn't cover arena or dome concerts, clubs, or after-midnight nightlife. Facts checked 15 October 2026.

Why is there an extra charge at the door in Japan?
Most live houses charge a fixed drink fee at the entrance, on top of your ticket.
Under UK consumer law (the DMCC Act 2024), required fees such as booking fees must be in the first price you see. The CMA's guidance explains how. The UK venue pages we checked didn't mention any drink purchase on top of the ticket.
In Japan, the ticket price you see online is not everything. At the entrance you also buy a drink ticket, which you swap at the bar for one drink. The most common amount on JGIG listings is ¥600. More: How much is the drink fee?
Do you queue for gigs in Japan?
You line up, but you go in by ticket number, not queue position.
None of the UK venue FAQs we checked mention numbered entry. The Louisiana in Bristol, for example, is standing only. In Japan, staff call ticket numbers in blocks at doors, and door tickets go in last. See What does the ticket number mean?
Is there a DICE-style app for Japanese gigs?
Not one single app: small shows are sold across several sites.
With DICE, the ticket lives in the app, and for many shows a waiting list resells sold-out tickets at face value. Small Japanese shows are sold across several different sites. Some need a Japanese phone number, and some work from abroad. See ticket sites that work without a Japanese phone number. Avoid unofficial resale sites.
Is there a cloakroom at Japanese live houses?
At some venues, sometimes only for some shows. Others have coin lockers, or neither.
At Exchange in Bristol, the cloakroom is £2 an item. In Japan, some live houses have coin lockers or a cloak room, sometimes only for some shows, and some have neither. Travel light. More: lockers, bags and re-entry.
What time do gigs finish in Japan?
It depends on the show, so check the event page against your last train.
Small UK venues often have curfews. The Louisiana in Bristol finishes at 22:30 Monday to Saturday, and King Tut's usually ends 18+ shows by 23:00. In Japan, the limit is the last train. As of October 2026, the last direct train from Shimokitazawa to Shibuya (Keio Inokashira Line) leaves at 00:17. JGIG doesn't list end times, so check the event page. Can 18-year-olds drink at gigs in Japan?
No. The drinking age in Japan is 20.
In the UK you can buy alcohol at 18, and staff may ask anyone who looks under 25 for ID. In Japan, the legal drinking age is 20. Some all-night shows in Tokyo don't admit anyone under 20, and others don't admit under-18s. Venues that name accepted IDs list a passport. We could not confirm whether foreign driving licences are accepted, so bring your passport.
Do you tip in Japan?
No. Tipping is not common in Japan.
VisitBritain says tipping isn't expected in the UK, though it is a nice gesture for good service. The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) says it's not common to tip for services in Japan. Neither the bar nor the door expects one.
What works the same as at home?
- Smoking. The UK bans smoking indoors. Tokyo's rules ban it indoors in principle, with exceptions for smoking rooms. Some venues, mostly in Osaka, have smoking areas: see smoking.
- Photos. Rules vary by venue and show in both countries. Check the event post.
